GFYD 11-07-11 "Greater Love"

John 15:13
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Back in the 1800’s there was a family, a husband, wife, two kids and a servant, and they were travelling at night in the winter in a horse drawn carriage. They were several miles from their destination when one the children said “daddy, what was that noise?” The dad knew exactly what it was…..it was a pack of wolves, and they had picked up their scent, and were gaining ground on the family. The man told his servant to get ready and he handed him a gun. When this large pack of wolves came up close enough to the carriage, the man and his servant fired into the pack of wolves, and killed a couple of them. The wolves instantly turned on the dead wolves and begin to eat their own. It wasn’t long though, with a taste for blood, that the wolves continued their chase of this family. The family was still a good distance from their destination where they could find safety, and they had no more bullets. As the wolves began to close in on the carriage once more, the man untied one of the three horses, and it ran into the woods…….the wolves followed it, and killed it. This bought the family some much needed time….but not enough, because the large pack of wolves were still hungry, and they were gaining ground yet again. As they came up to the sides of the carriage, the servant spoke up and said “There is only one thing to do, and he threw himself off the carriage, and the wolves killed him. Even though the wolves still began to close in again on the family, the man, woman and two children just made it into the house and were safe…..but they would never forget that night when one man voluntarily gave his life so that they could live. Now that’s a friend, and that’s what Jesus did for us! Amen
