Matthew 8:2 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Undoubtedly, this leper had seen what Jesus was capable of. Perhaps he had watched from a distance because of his condition, and saw Jesus restore sight to someone that was blind, or open up someone’s ears who was deaf. But what about him? Can’t you hear him asking that question in his remarks to Jesus “if you are willing”? That’s what he is asking. He is saying “Jesus, I know that you can do it because I have seen you, but I’m not sure that you will do it for me”. Think about it for a moment…..this guy was a leper. He was an outcast from his family and his people because of a disease that was not his fault. I can see how that would play on your self-esteem. I can see how that would change the way that you looked at yourself. Why would anyone take the time to do anything for him………no one had cared up until now. And then it happened. Jesus reached out and touched him. Now Jesus could have healed the man from a distance, but instead He chose to touch him. He was telling the man that He cared. He was telling Him that He could and would heal Him, but He would also be His friend. The next time that you pray, and you are tempted to say “what about me?”, let me go ahead and tell you today that He is willing, and He is available. Amen
