If it Can Happen to Elijah

1 Kings 19:3 Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. As many times as I have read this, it still surprises me. Elijah had just had his showdown at Mount Carmel with the prophets of Baal and Asherah. It was a mighty display of the miraculous as God answered the prayers of Elijah, and sent fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice. It was like the Super Bowl to determine who was really God, and The Lord won it hands down. The other team didn't even score! If I had been Elijah, it would've been hard not to strut as I walked away from the contest, I mean its great to be on the winning side. If that wasn't enough, God also brought the rain to end the drought, working through Elijah to show Himself to the people as God. The next thing that happened is what gets me. After all of this, Elijah is threatened by Jezebel and he fled for his life. Is this the same guy? It's hard to believe it, isn't it? I'm glad that the Bible shows these things to us. It doesn't hide the things about God's people that reveal their weaknesses or human side. It gives me hope. If the great prophet Elijah can have a momentary lapse of faith, then it can happen to me too. It also teaches me that its after my greatest victories that I can become the most vulnerable if I'm not careful. The devil doesn't take vacations. He loses a lot, but he never quits. It would do us good if we had the same kind of persistence, wouldn't it!
