Sensitive Enough to See
Numbers 22:34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
The king of Moab was threatened by Israel as they moved across the land. With God on their side, it seemed as if they were unstoppable, and they were. Balaak tried to hire Balaam to pronounce a curse on the people of God. Balaam knew that he shouldn't, but he got on his donkey and went with them. As he traveled, there was an angel of the Lord that stood in the way. Balaam didn't see it, but his donkey did! The donkey hesitated, and out of anger, Balaam hit the donkey. This happened again, and again until the donkey actually spoke! After having a conversation with his donkey, Balaam's eyes were opened to see the angel of the Lord with His sword drawn. I wonder why Balaam didn't see the angel before? Perhaps he was in a hurry, or perhaps he was preoccupied with what he would say to the king of Moab. I think that it's more likely that he was trying to keep from hearing or seeing God. He knew what the right thing to do was, but he was on his way to do the wrong thing, and it was less painful if he could keep from dwelling on the truth. Have you ever made a bad choice, and you knew it was a bad choice? Maybe as you were making it, you were given "checks" in your spirit that it wasn't right, but you tried to ignore them until they were unrecognizable. If we ignore the leading of the Spirit for long enough, we will lose our sensitivity, and our ability to hear and see His guidance. It's also true that sometimes people outside of your situation can clearly see that God is standing in your way, even though you can't. Let it be our daily prayer that God would stand in our way if we are headed in the wrong direction, and that we would be sensitive enough to see that He is leading us to turn around.
