An Unselfish Offering
Leviticus 4:3 ...then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the Lord for a sin offering.
The sin offering was given for those who sinned, but not presumptuously. When someone sinned with a "high hand" or in the face of God without regard, there was no sacrifice for them. In my opinion, a Christian who has been given a new nature, even though he might sin, does not do so with a "high hand" or presumptuously. The most interesting part of this sacrifice was where the blood was applied. It was applied to the vail of the temple, to the altar of incense, and to the brazen altar. Sin is an offense against the holiness of God, so blood was applied to the veil. Sin always affects our prayer life, so blood was applied to the altar of incense. Finally, sin requires that atonement be made, therefore blood was applied at the brazen altar. With the sin offering, all selfish motives had to be removed. The one bringing the offering could not bring it just for the meat or the leather......he was not allowed to benefit from the offering. This is a reminder to us that there is no benefit from our sins. As we look at these sacrifices, we begin to see that the Bible is a bloody book, and it is so because of the seriousness of sin. It is lethal, and death comes because of it. That's why in all of these sacrifices we can see the promise of God of a future offering that would be a once and for all kind of offering. Thank you Jesus!
